How To Play Roulette

The Basics Of Roulette

Roulette as we know it today has remained unchanged since the brothers Lois and François Blanc perfected it in eighteen forty two. Roulette is a game based on mathematical principles and uses a wheel set into one side of a betting table; both the wheel and the betting table are divided into sections known as sectors. These sectors use both colors and numbers and divide the table into various betting areas and options.

The main area of the betting table contains a grid of numbers that also corresponds to the same series of numbers marked off on the wheel itself. The numbers typically run from one to thirty six and an additional sector marked as zero, these numbers also use alternating colors of black and red, black for even numbers and red for odd numbers, the zero is marked green. This single zero layout is known as European roulette, another type of roulette known as American roulette follows the same number sequence and color sequence for even and odd numbers but instead of having only one zero the American roulette wheel has in addition to the single zero a double zero. Clearly one can see that the American roulette is the more challenging of the two versions.

Two Types Of Betting

There are two basic types of betting in roulette, inside betting and outside betting. In inside betting one concentrates betting mainly on the thirty six number grid plus single or double zero obviously depending on which style of roulette you are playing. If you place a bet on a single number its called a straight up bet, this bet will pay out thirty five to one.

You can also bet on two numbers instead of just on by placing your chip between the two numbers, this is known as a split bet and pays seventeen to one. One can increase this to include four numbers by placing a chip or chips on the corners of those numbers, its known as a quad bet and it pays eight to one. There are a number of other types of inside bets but the ones mentioned above are the basics. In outside betting one can bet on any red or any black by placing chips on the black or red square, similarly on odds or evens which in principle is the same as red or black and has the same payout. Another type of outside bet is to bet on first twelve, second twelve or third twelve so in other words, 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36.
